The Cohoes Falls as seen from the new viewing area. The falls were running
higher than normal for mid-summer for two reasons: 1) A higher
than normal amount of rain, 2) No water was being diverted through the
power generating station at the base of the falls while the intake and
feeder canal were being renovated. With two dams immediately up stream
of the falls, the Erie Canal water use, the city water supply, and the
power generator - the visitor usually finds only a trickle flowing over the
falls for most of the summer months.
