The Native American name for Mount Marcy is Tawahus, which I’m told translates as “Cloud Splitter”. Here we see Mount Marcy looming over Lake Tear of the Clouds, living up to its original name. Lake Tear is a little over 4300 feet above sea level, the summit of Marcy is another 1000 feet up — lost in the clouds. A good part of the rain in those clouds will run down Marcy’s south face and end up in Lake Tear, bringing with it an elevated level of acidity. From there the water flows down Feldspar Brook into the Opalescent River and then into the Hudson River.
