Sunday 8 July 2001. Started walking at 8:14 am. Stopped walking at about 3:45 pm at a place called Whitehouse. Maybe if we made George Bush spend a week at this Whitehouse he would get real with the environment! Estimated 14.25 miles in 7:31 of walking. The estimates don't include drive time on days that needed car jockeys but do include any on trail stops for food, drink, rest, or nature calls.
Monday 9 July 2001. Walked from about 8 am to 1:30 pm. Walked from Whitehouse to Piseco - including the road walk to the Piseco trailhead at Cold Stream Bridge. That would give us 9 miles in 5:30.
Tuesday 10 July 2001. Piseco trailhead to Sampson's Bog Outlet is about 13.5 miles and it took us about 6 hours.
Wednesday 11 July 2001. We set out from Sampson's Bog Outlet at 9:20 am and reached the last of the Cedar Lake lean-tos in the rain at 2:35 pm; an easy 9.4 miles despite the rain. It took just under 5 hours.
Thursday 12 July 2001. The plan was to go from Cedar Lake to Wakely Dam leaving 12 miles or so to Lake Durant and the car. We hit the trail at 9:21 am. When we got to Wakely Dam it was raining fairly hard, we were feeling pretty good and didn't relish setting up tents in the open field in a hard rain so we opted to move on. At 5:33 pm we arrived at Stephens Pond lean-to and called it a day. It was our longest day on the trail both in time and distance. We managed 18.8 miles in 8:01 with packs.
Friday 13 July 2001. After yesterday's "Baton Death March" today was a stroll in the park. We did the 3.4 miles to the car in about 1:15. Actually we made it to the check in booth of the campground in 1:10, which was about 3.1 to 3.2 miles - I didn't record the time to get to the car after we got a site and dumped our packs. The easiness of the day afforded us time to go to town, do laundry, and get a decent meal. When we got to the campground, at 10:45 am on a Friday, there were two sites left unreserved that were available for two nights. Somebody was looking at the two so we had to wait to see which was left. They decided that they didn't want either so we had our pick and took site 1 without walking in to check them out. We had passed site 1 on our way through the campground and I knew it was suitable.
