A flock of ducks or geese on the water are sometimes called a raft. Here the lead raft, of a raft of rafters, paddles into Blue Ledge. The Hudson River slows as it passes through the wide spot at Blue Ledge and affords rafters a good place to stop for lunch. Within minutes of the arrival of this raft, every open space on the shore was occupied by a wet person wearing a helmet. I was tempted to throw them a handful of peanuts—but you’re not supposed to feed wildlife! Overwhelmed by the local population boom—we started our hike out.
